‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 2 News Round-Up: Character Portraits, Interviews, Behind-The-Scenes

Penny Dreadful is among my most anticipated shows returning this year, and at least 70% of the reason why is Eva Green’s amazing portrayal of the haunting Vanessa Ives. We left off last season with Sir Malcolm Murray’s (Timothy Dalton) missing daughter, Mina, found and destroyed; Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) turning Ethan’s dying lover Brona (Billie Piper) into his monster’s undead bride; Ethan (Josh Hartnett) revealing himself to be an American werewolf in London; and Miss Vanessa Ives attempting to exorcise the demon out of her, only to question whether she’s really ready to be “normal.” Season 2 will undoubtedly reveal the consequences of our protagonists’ choices.

As for the show’s antagonists, season 2 moves away from the vampires of season 1 and introduces a cult of witches headed by Madame Kali (Helen McCrory) — who, if you remember, hosted that electrifying seance in early season 1. Sarah Greene also joins the cast as the witch Hecate, Madame Kali’s daughter. “The Devil has sent his servants to capture Vanessa’s soul,” says Eva Green in one behind-the-scenes interview, “and they’re actually much more terrifying than the Devil himself.”

Ready to be absolutely overwhelmed with Penny Dreadful season 2 goodies? Here are the season’s character posters and portraits:

Penny Dreadful‘s eerie season 2 trailer, in which we’re informed that “when Lucifer fell, he didn’t fall alone”:

“This season, Vanessa and Ethan form a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) are all waging battles of their own. Patti LuPone will guest star as a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past. Helen McCrory returns as Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali), the seductive spiritualist who will pose a unique threat to our protagonists this season, along with Simon Russell Beale, who is back as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle. Additional guest stars include Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard investigator; Sarah Greene as Poole’s powerful daughter, Hecate; and Johnny Beauchamp as a man with a singular past.”
