Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper’s third feature film together is Serena, a period drama set in North Carolina in the 1930s. The two previously worked on Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, both of which were nominated for Academy Awards and directed by David O. Russell. This time, however, the two are working under Danish director Susanne Bier (Love Is All You Need, In a Better World). So third time’s the charm? Maybe Bradley will finally get his own Oscar?
But, seriously, is anyone else tired of seeing these two in every movie?
Here’s the official synopsis:
Susanne Bier’s romantic period drama Serena details the deteriorating relationship between North Carolina timber magnate Pemberton (Bradley Cooper) and his fiercely independent, entrepreneurial-minded wife Serena (Jennifer Lawrence) following a devastating miscarriage. A woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and relishes the opportunity for manual labor in the forest, the enigmatic Serena subsequently grows intensely jealous of the woman who previously bore her husband a son, and quickly begins to unravel over suspicions that Pemberton is sheltering his illegitimate family.
Toby Jones, Rhys Ifans, David Dencik, and Ana Ularu also star. The screenplay was adapted from Ron Rash’s 2008 novel by Christopher Kyle (Alexander, K-19: The Widowmaker).
Serena will debut at the BFI London Film Festival in October.
The official Mockingjay Part 1 trailer has finally been released, showing new footage of District 13 amid the chaos of fighting against President Snow’s regime.
Although the trailer is only about a minute and a half long, a lot of intriguing footage is shown. It opens on Katniss’ voiceover: “I never wanted any of this. I never wanted to be in the Games. I just wanted to save my sister and keep Peeta alive.” As the film will show, “It’s the things we love most that destroy us.”
Much to Katniss’ surprise and relief, she finds out Peeta’s alive, but is being used as the Capitol’s weapon, just as she is being used as the Rebellion’s. Showing her true power as the Mockingjay, she gives Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and President Coin (Julianne Moore) an ultimatum. They either rescue Peeta or they’re going to have to go and find another Mockingjay.
Some of the returning characters shown are a much more toned down Effie (Elizabeth Banks), Gale (Liam Hemsworth) showing off his fighting skills alongside Katniss, and a very worried Finnick (Sam Claflin). Newcomer Natalie Dormer as Cressida is also briefly shown.
The first part to the end of the trilogy opens November 21st with tickets going on sale a month early on October 29th.
As much as I enjoyed those teasers released by Lionsgate showcasing Johanna and Peeta spinning around for 2 minutes, this official trailer shows a lot more about what’s coming up. Including Katniss Everdeen, the Mockingjay.
Introducing newcomers like Julianne Moore as President Coin and Natalie Dormer as Cressida, the trailer also shows older characters like Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) speaking about Katniss’ ability to become the Mockingjay. President Coin expresses her concern that Katniss won’t be able to live up to the Mockingjay name because the Games have destroyed her spirit.
“Are you fighting, Katniss? Are you here to fight with us?”
“I am. I will.”

President Snow delivers a message to the remaining districts with Peeta Mellark by his side.
The Capitol TV logo starts off the teaser, implying that this is what the citizens in the various districts are watching. As President Snow talks about keeping the peace, various words pop out on screen: Unity, Prosperity, Sacrifice.
Through all this, the camera’s centered mainly on President Snow, but when it pulls back, it shows a seemingly robotic and hijacked Peeta. Those who have read the books will understand why. It isn’t until Snow ends his telecast with “Panem Today, Panem Tomorrow, Panem Forever” that Peeta looks directly at the camera.
