‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Pilot Review: Carnies, Musical Numbers, Evil Clowns, Oh My

“There’s no place in Jupiter for freaks.” Despite (or perhaps because of) my “thing” with evil serial killer clowns, Freak Show quickly became my most anticipated season of American Horror Story… though this might not be saying much. I had zero expectations going into Murder House, a fact which worked in my favor when later episodes became a hot […]

Jessica Lange Covers David Bowie In ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Premiere

Jessica Lange gave us a Marlene Dietrich impersonation of a David Bowie cover in last night’s premiere of American Horror Story: Freak Show. Lange plays Elsa Mars, the German expatriate who manages the last remaining so-called “freak show” in Jupiter, Florida in the ’50s.

You can watch her performance in the video above, where she’s even wearing the same powder blue eyeshadow as David Bowie in the “Life On Mars” music video.

I enjoyed Lange’s cover (which is going to be made available on iTunes) but I’m not sure how I feel about a season of American Horror Story that’s a weird mash-up of Ryan Murphy’s other show, Glee. In the preview they showed after the episode, there will be even more singing when Bette and Dot, conjoined twins played by Sarah Paulson, take the stage; Dot sings her rendition of Fiona Apple’s “Criminal.”

Murphy told E! that, “We’re doing a lot of great musical performances this year. It’s a very unusual thing that we’re doing, but I’m really proud of it. We’ve done six musical numbers so far. They’re all very odd and haunting and different, with artists that I adore. I really wanted to do an homage to my friend and idol Baz Luhrmann who does such amazing things with music and period.”

You can expect Lana Del Rey (who sang “Young and Beautiful” for the soundtrack to Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby) and Kurt Cobain covers to pop up in future episode. Lange, in particular, will be singing Lana Del Rey.

New episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show air every Wednesday on FX.

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Official Trailer: Voyeur

Freak Show, the fourth season of Ryan Murphy’s critically-acclaimed horror drama on FX, is already being set up to be one of the stranger and campier seasons of American Horror Story.

In the first official trailer for Freak Show, we get a glimpse at some of the main players we’ll be spending most of our time with this season. First up, we have Kathy Bates as the bearded lady, Effil Darling. Next, there’s newcomer to the series Michael Chiklis (The Shield, No Ordinary Family) as the resident strongman and ex-husband of Bates’ character. Angela Bassett is returning as Desiree Dupree, a woman with three breasts who’s married to Chiklis’ character.

Evan Peters’ character, Jimmy Darling, is shown embracing a blonde woman. Sarah Paulson is playing conjoined twin sisters, Bette and Dot. Finally, we end with Jessica Lange’s character, Elsa Mars, a German expatriate who manages the freak show; she’s accompanied by the smallest woman in the world, Jyoti Amge, whose character is yet to be identified. This will reportedly be Lange’s final season of American Horror Story, which I’m not too thrilled about. Lange’s involvement is definitely one of the top reasons to tune into American Horror Story in the first place.

In addition to the above actors, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Emma Roberts, and Patti LaBelle are all returning. Roberts hinted to E! Online that her character, Maggie, “may not appear to be a freak on the surface, but that might not be true.” Newcomers include Wes Bentley and John Carroll Lynch as Twisty the “clown killer.”

That’s right. Clowns. So if you want to be able to go to sleep tonight, then whatever you do, don’t watch this clip.

American Horror Story: Freak Show will premiere on October 8, 2014 on FX.

“American Horror Story” Teaser: Fallen Angel

The first teaser trailer for American Horror Story: Freak Show, the fourth season of FX’s horror series, has arrived.

Freak Show will take place in Jupiter, Florida in the 1950s and will be centered around one of the only remaining freak shows in the country. Returning cast members include Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, and Gabourey Sidibe. Lange is reportedly playing a German expatriate and manager of the freak show.

Michael Chiklis (The Shield, Fantastic Four) is a new addition; he will play the strongman of the freak show, ex-husband to Bates’ character, and married to Bassett’s character. Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) will also appear this season as Eddie, a “tormentor from Kathy Bates’ character’s past who is seeking revenge.”

American Horror Story: Freak Show will debut this fall.
