We’re always on the look out for the best new music here at PopInsomniacs, and we were fortunate enough to be able to speak to insanely cool new band The Novelties, ahead of the upcoming SoundCloud debut of their first single Dazed By The Sea.

Who are The Novelties, and how did you form the band?

Sophie: The Novelties is a sonic collaboration between the two of us, Sophie Noire and Kelly Mylod. We formed the band out of a fatalistic connection and mutual passion to express ourselves through music.

How would you describe your sound?

Kelly: Alternative electro-pop.

Can you give us a brief description of the new single?

Sophie: The single is inspired by a love lost years ago. Lyrically, the song captures the emotional process of moving on from that relationship. It was cathartic to breathe life into Dazed By The Sea by taking a regretful experience from my past and transforming it into very personal lyrics that people can relate to.

Kelly: It was a cool process experimenting with various beats and melodies that would add an uplifting contrast to the emotional lyrics.

What’s the best reaction you’ve had so far to your music?

Kelly: Dazed By The Sea is our debut single, so we’re looking forward to having the song available to stream on SoundCloud in March. We can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on.

Which current artists are you most enjoying at the moment?

Kelly: I have an eclectic mix of artists I enjoy listening to. I’m really into Clueso for his combination of poetic lyrics and catchy melodies. I also like RÜFÜS when I’m in the mood for an alternative dance vibe.

Sophie: I recently saw Marilyn Manson during The Hell Not Hallelujah Tour and Lana Del Rey with the iconic Courtney Love for The Endless Summer Tour. Manson’s The Pale Emperor and Del Rey’s Ultraviolence are on my playlist along with alt-J, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Neighbourhood.

If you could collaborate with any artist producing work at the moment, who would it be and why?

Kelly: At the moment our focus is on exploring the sound of The Novelties. Once our music is released, we’re curious to see what other artists will best suit our sonic style and band aesthetic.

We’re just turning into 2016. How would you like to see this year pan out in terms of your music?

Sophie: Right now, we are in the concept stage for the Dazed By The Sea music video and currently in the studio working on the second single.

Kelly: We’re excited to watch the rest of the year unfold as we continue to release our music and media content. Stay tuned on

Dazed By The Sea will be released via Soundcloud in March!
