The international trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out with new footage for the upcoming December 18 film. Here’s a quick play-by-play!

We open with a wide shot of a tiny figure standing before the massive hull of a wrecked spaceship. A woman’s voice asking “Who are you?” and the reply from a young woman Rey (Daisy Ridley) in desert garb: “I’m no one.” Rey appears to be fixing something mechanical, then we see familiar footage of her interacting with the rolly-polly droid sidekick. Rey carries what looks like a staff weapon that’s too long for her, but pretty cool nonetheless. These shot deliberately evoke the visuals of the original Star Wars film, as well as The Phantom Menace, and it’s good a tradition to uphold. As we learned from this summer’s Mad Max: Fury Road, one can never have too many shot of a wide and terrible desert-scape.

At about 30 second mark we see Rey and Finn (John Boyega) emerging from a large equipment tent side by side with the droid (BB-8) as one-man fighter ships appear on the sunset horizon. Then we get a thrilling shot of several Stormtroopers destroying what has to be civilian property with giant flamethrowers. The Big Bad Helmet Guy appears, so it looks like a full scale invasion is under way!

Big Bad Helmet Guy promises the burnt skull of Darth Vader that he will finish what his predecessor began, and we get the same shots from previous trailers: explosions, the Millennium Falcon in combat flight, the sword-hilt-style light saber.

A new piece of footage gives us a brief but promising character introduction: “I don’t know your name,” she states. Looking a little nervous, Boyega’s character replies “Finn,” and she gives him her name in return. It’s only one clip, but these two look like they might have genuine screen chemistry.

We see some brief shots of the whole cast — Princess Leia looking solemnly at something, a group walking into an old facility, Han telling the newbies that all the stories are true, and two hands exchanging a static lightsaber. We also get a great shot of Chewbacca squeezing a trigger that causes an impressive explosion. Then there’s a new clip of Rey terrified as Big Bad Helmet Guy wields his oddly-fluctuating lightsaber right next to her cheek. I hope she has tough skin after living on a desert planet. I also wish that the trailer didn’t show her as the only scared person, and then show it twice.

From the trailers so far, it looks like Finn will be the one to take up the jedi lightsaber, and Rey will be more of a tech + hand weapons fighter. The original cast looks like they will be involved in more than just passing roles, but I hope they don’t overshadow the new kids.

As the trailer closes, there’s an impressive wide-shot of an air battle above a snowy landscape looks promising, but at this point in the third trailer I’m wondering if Star Wars filmmakers honestly believe there are only 3 types of climate in human existence: desert hell, snowy mountain hell, and jungle hell. When will we get a battle along the rocky beaches or great grass plains?

“Hope is not lost today,” says the mystery woman’s voice over a weeping image of Rey, “It is found.” Fade to darkness, roll logo, and count the inclement dollar signs.
