Were you excited for the premiere of American Horror Story: Hotel but didn’t have time to actually watch it? Don’t worry, I watched it for you!
The premiere of season 5 opened up many storyline doors during its first episode. It begins with two Swedish women checking in to the Hotel Cortez and right away being exposed to the creepy vibes that the building gives off. We are then shortly introduced to Iris (Kathy Bates) who is the receptionist in charge of checking the customers in. As the women explore the hotel, they are exposed to eerie vibes and ultimately find a body inside their bedroom mattress.
Cut to the next shot, and we’re introduced to another character: John Lowe (Wes Bentley) an LA detective who receives a phone call from an anonymous person who has begun a killing spree and is located at the hotel. The whole episode shifts back and forth following Lowe’s story as well the ones intertwined with the people that reside in the hotel.
As we are also introduced to Liz Taylor (Denis O’Hare), Donovan (Matt Bomer) and The Countess (Lady Gaga), it is revealed that both Donovan and The Countess are in a relationship in which they sexually seduce other couples and kill them afterward. Right away, The Countess’s regal vibes and thirst for blood are exposed. At the same time, we see Sally (Sarah Paulson) – the heroine addict with a longing for love who makes men tell her they love her before they die.
Switch back to Detective Lowe, and we find out he has a family, who is sometimes endangered due to his job, as well as a wife who resents him for the loss of their missing child, Holden. The anonymous killer makes himself known once more as he leads Lowe on a chase for his wife that ultimately leads him to find two dead bodies.
We are then led to know fashion designer Will Drake (Cheyenne Jackson) and his son as they come in to the hotel because (SURPRISE!) they want to buy the building. As the residents of the hotel begin to worry about being turned out onto the streets, we are exposed to another plotline – Iris is Donovan’s mother, Donovan was a heroine addict who overdosed at the hotel in 1994 while in the presence of Sally who is then pushed out of a window by Iris.
BAM! The plotline thickens. Is everyone who resides at the hotel a ghost? Is this another murder house structure in which the ghosts can actually leave the place they died? And why is The Countess a blood sucker?! This episode has left us with many questions that need to be answered as soon as possible!
Finally, The Countess is giving Will Drake’s son a tour of the hotel in which she reveals a game room filled with candy and everything a kid would want. Now what’s the twist here? Holden, Lowe’s missing son, is one of the creepy little kids that the countess is keeping in that game room! Like I said, there are SO many questions that need answering.
As the episode comes to an end, the last thing we see is Detective Lowe checking in to Room 64 of the Hotel Cortez. As his investigation for the anonymous killer begins, so does the crazy storyline for this season.
