Netflix Debuts ‘Sense8’ Trailer

Grab a pillow to clutch, because in less than a month Netflix rolls out the first 12 episode season of the sci-fi urban thriller Sense8.

With an international cast and the behind-the-scenes creative work of The Wachowskis, J. Michael Straczynski, and Grant Hill, Sense8 is a different direction for the streaming media company whose current hits are dramas and comedies. Netflix continues to impress this year with high-production original programming, and Sense8 may up their game even more. The official synopsis of Sense 8 describes the show: “One moment links 8 minds in disparate parts of the world, putting 8 strangers in each other’s lives, each other’s secrets, and in terrible danger.”

The trailer demonstrates this abstract premise by transposing images of different actors into the same scene, as if standing in the place of the opposite person. They look in mirrors and see a face that isn’t theirs, then find themselves involved in actions and behaviors they previously have no experience with. Last year ,director Brin Hill and writer Joss Whedon teamed up for a similar premise in the film In Your Eyes, framing it as a love story.  There’s little love lost in the trailer for Sense8, as we see women and men from different continents thrown into jarring scenarios and chased helter-skelter around the globe. The warm voice of Naveen Andrews (Lost, The English Patient) narrates the trailer with oblique warnings of a vast conspiracy.

I’m already asking myself if it’s a science experiment, magic, or psychic powers that bind these unlucky folk together, and I’ll definitely hit my couch the week this debuts. The diverse international cast should go a long way to marketing the show to wider audiences, and I’m always excited to stories with new voices that don’t fit the typical American TV mold.

The international cast includes: Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Jamie Clayton, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Tina Desai, Doona Bae, Aml Ameen and Max Riemelt. Also, Daryl Hannah, Naveen Andrews, Terrence Mann, Freema Agyeman, Alfonso Herrera, Erendira Ibarra, Adam Shapiro, Ness Bautista and Joe Pantoliano.

Sense8 debuts on Netflix streaming on June 5th.
