Once Upon A Time is back!
Everyone is adjusting to settling back in after having vanquished another foe. Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) is still trying to find a way to release The Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) from The Sorcerer’s Hat, and Henry (Jared Gilmore) and Regina (Lana Parrilla) are in search of the author of the fairy tale book. Regina is looking for her happy ending… but she isn’t the only one.
The newly banished Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) is also cultivating a plan to make the villains win. He’s relying on the reluctant kindness of Ursula (Merrin Dungey), who he found working in an aquarium in the winter finale.
Gold and Ursula go in search of Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit) whose husband’s assets are being seized by the FBI as they roll up to her mansion. With Cruella clutching her black and white fur coat and her car, the trio head out to hatch their evil plan.
In this week’s flashback, we find out that Rumplestiltskin worked with Cruella, Ursula and Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) once before. He talks them into helping him steal a crystal orb that holds great power. To attain it, he needs Cruella’s way with animals (namely beetles), Maleficent’s ability to suck up fire, and Ursula’s tentacles. When he has the item, he betrays them, saying the place is guarded by an evil entity that seeks out and kills the person with the heart with the most potential for darkness and devours it. The trio escape, which sets up Cruella and Ursula’s hesitation to agree to Gold’s plans.
Meanwhile, an Oxford professor gets back to Belle, saying he knows how to release the fairy. Using the spell and Regina, Blue is freed. As everyone celebrates Blue’s return, they miss the dark creature that follows her out of the Sorcerer’s Hat.
Regina asks Blue about the blank storybook she found and Blue says the Sorcerer and the author are two different people.
The creature suddenly attacks, sending everyone into a frenzy.
Gold tells Cruella and Ursula his plan to get them into Storybrooke, and they in turn would sneak him in so he could get his magic back. Cruella calls Mary Margaret and offers a solution to the creature plaguing Storybrooke. If they can get it to the town line and away from magic, it will disappear.
Emma and Regina lead it out of town in Emma’s yellow VW. When it looks like they won’t make it, Regina teleports herself to the town line. Emma gets close to the line and steps on the breaks of her car, sending the creature over the line and destroying it.
Thankful for their help, the Storybrooke inhabitants invite Cruella and Ursula into town.
Later that night. the two women go back for Gold. They ask him now that he’s here, what’s his plan? He tells them about pretending to be the Oxford professor and knowing the spell would let the dark creature out of The Sorcerer’s Hat. He also says the creature was not after Regina — it was after Emma.
The episode closes with Mary Margaret and David meeting Cruella and telling her she’s not allowed to reveal what happened between the three of them in the Enchanted Forest, especially Emma.
