The first trailer for Magic Mike XXL begins with Channing Tatum welding something for some reason, and then all of a sudden “Pony” by Ginuwine starts playing. Tatum goes on to show us his moves.
Magic Mike XXL definitely looks like it’s going to be lighter, funnier, and less plot-y than the original Magic Mike. No Cody Horn or Alex Pettyfer, either, which is a good thing considering they were the weakest parts of the first movie for me. On the other hand, Matthew McConaughey and his character Dallas is a huge loss.
But we do get the return of Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, and Adam Rodriguez. New additions are Amber Heard, who appears to be Tatum’s new love interest, Andie McDowell, Donald Glover, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Strahan, and Gabriel Iglesias.
Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.
Magic Mike XXL opens in theaters on July 1, 2015.
