BioWare Drops ‘Shadow Realms’ To Focus On ‘Mass Effect’ & ‘SWTOR’

After all that build-up with the “You’ve Been Chosen” campaign, BioWare Austin has canceled development on Shadow Realms, citing a desire to focus on their other projects like Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Inquisition, other as of yet unnamed IPs, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Shadow Realms, which apparently would have been BioWare’s first new IP in six freakin’ years, was supposed to be a story-driven online action roleplaying game set in modern day Earth and a parallel magical world named Embra.

Yesterday BioWare Austin’s Jeff Hickman released a statement concerning the cancellation, which you can read in its entirety here:

“While the team did amazing work on the game concept and we got lots of great feedback from our fans at events and through other game testing, right now there are other projects for the team to work on within the BioWare studios for the coming year and beyond. We’ve got an incredibly talented team here at the Austin studio, and they are excited and already deep on new projects within the BioWare family, ones that will make some great BioWare games even better…

For all the people that registered for the Shadow Realms Closed Alpha, we’re working on a way to say thank-you for signing up. To all those players that gave us feedback at Gamescom and PAX, and those that shared their thoughts and impressions in the past months, we thank you for being part of the conversation.”

While I am a little disappointed about this (I was looking forward to playing another urban fantasy-type RPG, since there seems to be a strange dearth of them), this cancellation came early enough in the development process that I couldn’t get too attached to the project. Besides, if it means more people working on the next Mass Effect, I’m all aboard. I suppose I can just continue to sate my appetite for modern-day-Earth-meets-monsters-and-magic with the ever-excellent The Secret World.

What was your reaction upon hearing about Shadow Realms‘ cancellation? Did you sign up for the Alpha before this all went down?

I’m happy about SWOTOR right now. Cause until now I can’t resist the fun and I still enjoy playing it.
