Richard Armitage, best known for The Hobbit trilogy, has been cast in the upcoming season of NBC’s Hannibal.
Armitage plays Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit movies. Wikipedia tells me the character’s full name is Thorin II Oakenshield, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under the Mountain… which is a mouthful. I don’t really know anything about The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, to be honest. But I thought Armitage was great in North and South, a period drama and four-part miniseries produced by BBC.
According to TV Line, Armitage will play Francis Dolarhyde a.k.a. The Tooth Fairy who is the main villain in Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Dolarhyde is described as a “serial killer with a set of chompers that would make the Big Bad Wolf a little envious — and a penchant for targeting entire households for slaughter.”
Armitage is slated to appear in six episodes. Hannibal season 3 will premiere sometime in the spring.
