Martin Freeman Is Bilbo Baggins In ‘The Office: Middle Earth’

Before Martin Freeman was Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, he played the Tim Canterbury — the original Jim Halpert — in the U.K.’s The Office.

Freeman hosted Saturday Night Live last night, and of course the writers took this opportunity to do a crossover between The Office and The Hobbit. In The Office: Middle Earth, a pre-recorded sketch, Bilbo has saved the world and now he works at a modestly-sized paper company run by Gandalf the Grey (Bobby Moynihan) who is either doing his best Ricky Gervais or Steve Carell impression. This isn’t the first time Saturday Night Live has parodied The Office, but I thought this particular attempt was well-executed.

Taran Killam’s Gollum, who serves as the Dwight in this sketch, is pretty hilarious — the star of the sketch, as far as I’m concerned. Kate McKinnon is Tauriel, the office’s receptionist, and she helps Bilbo play a prank on Gollum. We also have Kyle Mooney as Legolas, and an Orc who’s the butt of one of Gandalf’s inappropriate jokes.

The musical guest last night was Charli XCX; she performed “Boom Clap” and “Break the Rules.”

Next week, Amy Adam is hosting Saturday Night Live‘s Christmas episode with musical guest One Direction.
