Deadline reports that Justin Lin, director of the The Fast and the Furious franchise, will take over from J.J. Abrams and direct Star Trek 3.
Abrams, alongside screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, launched the latest Star Trek movie franchise in 2009. The second movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, came out in 2013. While Into Darkness received mostly positive reviews from critics (it has a 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), longtime fans of the Star Trek franchise were largely negative, saying that it didn’t honor or represent Gene Roddenberry’s vision. Abrams himself admitted that the Star Trek TV show was “too philosophical” for him when he was growing up.
Abrams is wrapping up production on Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which is set for release next year, while Lin has signed on to direct a few episodes of season 2 of HBO’s critically-acclaimed drama True Detective.
Star Trek 3, which will presumably star Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and more, is scheduled for a 2016 release date. Roberto Orci is attached to produce.
