Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter have been cast as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage for Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series. Deadline broke the news.
Earlier reports about Jessica Jones’ casting narrowed down the choices to Krysten Ritter, Teresa Palmer, Alexandra Daddario, and Jessica De Gouw, with the role of Luke Cage coming down to Mike Colter and Lance Gross. According to Deadline, Ritter and Palmer both did chemistry reads with Colter.
The 13-episode Jessica Jones miniseries will be produced and written by Melissa Rosenberg. Luke Cage will make an appearance, before going off to spearhead his own miniseries.
If you’re a fan of The Good Wife, then you probably know Mike Colter best as Lemond Bishop, one of Lockhart/Gardner’s recurring clients and a really compelling character. I’ve also been a huge fan of Krysten Ritter ever since Breaking Bad, and seeing her in ABC’s tragically short-lived comedy Don’t Trust The B made me love her even more. So I’m thrilled about this casting.
The first Marvel miniseries in Netflix’s roster is Daredevil starring Charlie Cox and airing in 2015. Iron Fist is the only remaining hero yet to be cast. Hopefully, Misty Knight will have a substantial role in both Iron Fist and The Defenders miniseries. Marvel is woefully lacking in women of color, at the moment.
In other news, Marvel confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange. Click for my reaction.

I know we all saw this coming, but I’m still disappointed. I don’t have anything against Cumberbatch’s acting abilities, but he’s such a boring, uninteresting choice. How many franchises is he going to be in?!
What do you think of these recent Marvel casting decisions? Let me know in the comments if I’m the only one drinking the Cumberbatch haterade.
