Cyber Thriller ‘Blackhat’ Gets Second Trailer

Oh, the irony. The buffed-up man who played the technologically challenged God of Thunder, Thor, is now playing an incarcerated hacker called to help the FBI with a cyber-terrorism case involving an unsolvable computer code.

The second trailer for Chris Hemsworth’s Blackhat has been released, and although he looks completely unconvincing as a computer criminal that’s been behind bars for ten years, the rest of the cast look more interesting. Viola Davis stars as what appears to be an FBI agent, while Tang Wei (a prominent Chinese actress known for Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution) is set to play a Chinese federal agent involved with the global crisis that, apparently, only Hemsworth’s hacking genius can solve.

Alright. Suspending disbelief.

The plot looks fairly standard (technology! it’s scary!), but it’s the overseas scenes that hold the most interest, with filming having taken place in Hong Kong as well as L.A., which ought to appeal to the huge, Chinese audience that we can assume distribution company Universal Pictures is aiming to nab with this film.

Director Michael Mann is said to have hired mathematicians to teach Hemsworth how to correctly imitate coding, so we’ll see how convincing it looks in January next year.

American and Chinese agencies work together to stop a conspiracy involving a cyber criminal. With the help of Nicholas Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth), the authorities pursue the mysterious suspect as the dangerous search leads them from Chicago to Hong Kong.

Blackhat opens in the U.S. on January 16, 2015.
