The teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated sequel to Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi — over 30 years later — is finally here. Called The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Episode VII will hopefully erase all the bad memories fans have of the prequels. The 88-second trailer reveals little about the plot, but it has no doubt got fans very excited and over-analyzing every detail.
The first person we see is John Boyega (Attack the Block) — one of the movie’s protagonists — wearing Stormtrooper gear. He’s in the middle of a sandy desert that looks like Tatooine, Luke Skywalker’s home planet. There’s a cute new droid rolling around, as well.
Later, Daisy Ridley is shown riding a speeder bike, with Oscar Isaac piloting an X-Wing starfighter. An ominous-looking cloaked figure wields a red lightsaber that doesn’t look like anything we’ve seen before. There’s also an updated version of the Millennium Falcon, zipping across the sky.
The narrator, who sounds suspiciously like Benedict Cumberbatch (is it Adam Driver trying to do his best Cumberbatch impression?), booms: “There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side, and the light.”
Of course, the iconic Star Wars theme song composed by John Williams is prominent in the trailer.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Anthony Daniels. Episode VII is the first in a planned trilogy, with Rian Johnson (Looper) set to write and direct Episode VIII.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens will open in theaters on December 18th, 2015.
