Katie Cassidy Is Black Canary in ‘Arrow’ & Michelle MacLaren Might Direct ‘Wonder Woman’

Entertainment Weekly had the exclusive first look photos of Katie Cassidy as Black Canary in The CW’s Arrow.

Katie Cassidy looks significantly blonder in these photos than she usually does on the show, so I’m assuming she’s wearing a wig. The actress, who’s the daughter of David Cassidy, is a series regular on Arrow and plays Oliver Queen’s ex-girlfriend Laurel Lance. Not exactly a fan favorite character, Laurel was supposed to be Oliver’s fated love interest, according to comic book canon, but the show has veered significantly away from that direction partially because of the reaction to her character.

Laurel’s sister Sara was the original Black Canary until she was killed in the Season 3 premiere. Laurel’s alter ego will make her debut in Episode 10 titled “Left Behind,” which will air in December.

Meanwhile, Michelle MacLaren is the frontrunner to direct Wonder Woman.

MacLaren’s directing credits include Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and the upcoming spin-off series Better Call Saul. An earlier rumor indicated that Warner Bros. was looking for a female director for Wonder Woman and MacLaren was one of the top contenders. Variety also reported that MacLaren was in talks with WB.

Rumored plot details for Wonder Woman is that the movie will be a prequel taking place in the 1920s. Bleeding Cool reported that the film would “show Diana exploring that world — a world where women have only just got the vote — from her unique perspective.” The catalyst for Wonder Woman getting off Paradise Island would be the arrival of a man who asks the Amazons for help.

Gal Gadot will play the title character. She’ll first debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.

Wonder Woman has a release date of June 23, 2017.
