So I’ve officially boarded the Taylor Swift train. I absolutely love this new phase of her career and some of the tracks in 1989 I’m currently obsessing over are “This Love,” “Style,” and “Blank Space”.
Taylor Swift released her music video for “Blank Space” today (after Yahoo leaked it too early). In the video, Swift satirizes the paranoid, psycho ex-girlfriend persona that the media has given her — the one who writes revenge lyrics about all of her boyfriends.
In an interview with SiriusXM, Swift talks about how “Blank Space” began as a joke. She describes the song as “cheeky” and how she was inspired by the media’s profile of her as a “serial dater” who’s “over-emotional,” “unstable,” and a “clingy, needy nightmare.” She thought about “how incredibly complex and interesting that character actually [would be] if it were a real girl.” Swift then wrote “Blank Space” from the point-of-view of that girl.
The boyfriend in the music video is played by model Sean O’Pry. Their relationship starts off pretty lovey-dovey until Swift goes crazy and starts cutting up his portrait, setting fire to his clothes, smashing his car with a golf club, and stabbing cakes. It’s a less extreme version of Gone Girl.
Swift’s cat, Olivia Benson, also makes a cameo.
