The Mindy Project 3×01 “We’re A Couple Now, Haters!” Recap: We’re Back, Bitches!

“We’re back, bitches.” – Mindy Kaling

Finally! The first episode of Season 3 eased us straight back into things in the most harmonious way. To all the people who thought the show would get boring with Mindy and Danny as a couple have been proven wrong. In fact, the show was just as funny, if not funnier, than the past seasons with just the same amount of tenderness and love between the characters. Also, is it just me or is the cast a lot more attractive this season?

This episode dealt primarily with the changes Danny and Mindy have to make in order for their relationship to work. For Mindy, she has to learn to be a little more discreet in the workplace concerning her and Danny’s sexual relationship. It seems like most of the office knows that Danny’s pretty good with his mouth, which makes him very uncomfortable. When he confronts Mindy about it, they both agree that she has to change her ways.

Meanwhile, Jeremy and Peter’s girlfriend Lauren (who’s old college buddies with Jeremy) start working together to organize a charity event. As they spend more time together, the closer they get. Danny catches Jeremy giving her a massage late one night and entrusts Mindy with the information. That same night, Mindy finds a pink thong with the name Diamond on them and assumes they’re from one of Danny’s ex-girlfriends. Because she’s curious, she goes to Peter, who then gives her the information that it’s a stripper’s thong. As she’s researching strippers named Diamond, Morgan comes in, sees the thong and tells her it’s a male’s. She eventually finds an old picture of Danny from when he was a stripper.

At the charity event at Lauren’s apartment, Danny finds out that Tamra heard from Morgan who heard from Mindy that Jeremy and Lauren are hooking up. Mindy and Danny confront each other over his being a stripper and her blabbing about everything and come to the conclusion that he didn’t tell her about his past because he can’t trust her. He storms off to his apartment.

We’re also introduced to Morgan’s cousin Lou, played by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob Mcelhenney who recently got out of jail for murdering and stealing cars and is now helping around the office. He ends up being the one who tells Peter about Jeremy and Lauren. Peter speaks to Lauren about it, who tells him that she and Jeremy kissed. Angered, Peter goes ahead and punches Jeremy in the face, punching out a few teeth. It seems that Jeremy’s entered the competition for Lauren’s heart.

Jeremy and Lou visit Danny to give back his wallet that Lou stole and Lou ends up leaving Danny with some wise advice, “The truth will set you free.”

Danny really takes this to heart and ends up writing a list of all of his secrets. He reads some to Mindy to prove to her that he does trust her, he just had different reasons for not saying them. He didn’t tell her his middle name because it’s his dad’s name and he didn’t want it. As he opens up to her, Mindy responds in the same way. The reason she told everyone every little detail about her relationship with Danny was so that it could be real. “The more real it seems, the less likely it is that it’ll all get taken away from me.” Danny assures her that it’s real. And it is. They’re in it for the long haul.

And then the most amazing scene to ever grace our television screens happened. Danny performs a strip tease for Mindy. Whoa, Nelly.
