‘Big Eyes’ Trailer: Tim Burton Directs Margaret Keane Biopic

Is Tim Burton ready for us to love him again? It looks like the famed director might be returning to form with Big Eyes, starring Amy Adams as painter Margaret Keane. (Johnny Depp is conspicuously absent from the cast list, and I can’t say I’m too bothered by that.)

Big Eyes tells the story of Margaret Keane whose paintings of children with saucer-shaped, over-sized eyes became famous during the 1950s and 60s. Her husband at the time, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), took credit for her work until she challenged him in court during their divorce proceedings. The movie will chronicle the “legal difficulties” Margaret had with her husband over ownership and credit of the paintings.

Amy Adams has been nominated five times for the Oscar and has lost out every single time. Most recently, she was nominated for Best Actress for American Hustle but lost to two-time winner Cate Blanchett. Maybe her bad luck streak will end with Big Eyes? She already has some competition in Reese Witherspoon for Wild.

As for Burton, his most notable biopic is Ed Wood, which told the story of legendary director and cult filmmaker Ed Wood – starring Johnny Depp before Depp and Burton’s partnership went downhill (see: Dark Shadows).

Ed Wood screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski wrote the screenplay for Big Eyes. Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, Danny Huston, and Terence Stamp also star.

Big Eyes opens Christmas Day, December 25th.
