Megan Fox as April O’Neil in First ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Trailer

Produced by Michael Bay and directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the first trailer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie debuted today. Not only do we get a good look at the design of the Turtles (looks okay to me), but the trailer implies that April O’Neil’s father and Shredder (William Fichtner) were somehow responsible for creating the Ninja Turtles.

Despite the Ninja Turtles cracking jokes and being their typical goofy selves, the trailer for TMNT seems to be going for a somewhat dark and gritty tone. TMNT stars Megan Fox, Danny Woodburn, Will Arnett, Whoopi Goldberg, and more. The Ninja Turtles are played by Alan Ritchson (Raphael), Jeremy Howard (Donatello), Pete Ploszek (Leonardo), and Noel Fisher (Michelangelo). Here’s the official synopsis:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

TMNT will be released in theaters on August 8, 2014.

This looks like a case of not just approaching the Uncanny Valley, but falling head-first into it. Those turtles are just not okay. Not okay.
