It’s time to officially take How I Met Your Dad seriously.
That might not have been the case for awhile now, but news has hit today that indie actress Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha, Greenberg, Lola Versus) has signed on to be the lead in the high-profile spin-off of How I Met Your Mother.
As the 9-season run for HIMYM comes to a mostly satisfying close (the two-part finale airs March 31st), it’s time to get used to a new acronym: HIMYD. It certainly doesn’t roll off the tongue as easily, that’s for sure, but Greta Gerwig’s casting definitively legitimizes the project. The star will also serve as a producer on the series, joining HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas as well as Emily Spivey (Up All Night). Pamela Fryman, HIMYM’s main director, will also be directing the pilot.
With Greta on-board, the pilot has been given a greenlight. After her screen presence, however, I’d argue that the most exciting aspect of this is that she also appears expected to write for the series (she wrote the aforementioned and acclaimed Frances Ha), adding a well-spoken female voice to the proceedings, and (hopefully) making How I Met Your Dad more than just a money grab. I’m imagining an older, wiser, less divisive Lena Dunham/Girls vibe.
If the casting intel provided by TVLine holds true (a lot can change before a pilot comes to fruition), these are the motley cast of characters we can expect to find in the forthcoming show:
SALLY | She’s vibrant, messy and unpredictable — a “female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life.” She’s thinking of calling it quits with her husband of a year, Gavin. She’ll lean on her circle of friends for advice and support through the inevitable divorce. That circle includes…
JULIET | Sally’s sexy, flamboyant, energetic, party-girl BFF. She runs a successful fashion blog. She’s delighted to learn Sally is ending things with the terminally boring Gavin.
DANNY | Sally’s older gay brother, a Type A, overachieving lawyer whom she shares little in common with. They nonetheless share a tight bond, although Sally’s decision to move in with Danny after her split with Gavin promises to test that bond.
TODD | Danny’s warm, outgoing husband and one of Sally’s closest friends from college. Unlike Danny, Todd welcomes Sally into their home.
FRANK | The head of IT for Juliet’s fashion blog. He’s a hot nerd. He has genuine feelings for Sally, but it’s a one-sided flirtation. At least for the moment.
NARRATOR | It’s Sally from the future. She’s reliving the events of her past to her kids.
I’m not sure we needed to recycle the premise, but now that CBS and Bays, Thomas and Spivey have found their voice and their muse…I can’t help but be intrigued going forward. I also like that she starts off the show married…even though that could end up being very cloying. We’ll find out, and stay tuned for more casting.
