FOX’s upcoming Gotham TV series has cast Ben McKenzie, Sean Pertwee, and more; Alexander Skarsgard will headline Tarzan, and Maggie Q will play a notorious Chinese pirate.
“Gotham” TV Series
Batman is coming to FOX. The events of Gotham will kick off after 10 year old Bruce Wayne’s parents have just been murdered. A young Jim Gordon will be assigned to the case, and it was officially confirmed that he’ll be played by Ben McKenzie, best known for playing brooding bad boy Ryan Atwood in The O.C.. Welcome to Gotham, bitch!
All I can promise is I will do my best not to screw this up. Can’t wait to get to work.

Of course, fans of Southland will remember McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, a meaty and dramatic role that did a great job of showcasing McKenzie’s acting abilities. McKenzie also gets some comic book cred for voicing Batman in the 2011 animated movie, Batman: Year One, opposite Bryan Cranston’s Jim Gordon.
Meanwhile, Sean Pertwee, who recently appeared in Elementary as Inspector Lestrade, has been cast as the Wayne family’s loyal butler Alfred. He’s “a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London.” “Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.”
Robin Lord Taylor will play a young Oswald Cobbleplot a.k.a. The Penguin, “a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.” He’s also been described as having “the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal.”
Zabryna Guevara will play Gordon’s boss, Captain Essen. She “balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop.”
Finally, Welsh actress Erin Richards (Being Human, Misfits) will play Gordon’s fiance, Barbara Kean. “A sophisticated emergency room doctor, Barbara is the fiancée of James Gordon, joyful but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband.”
Alexander Skarsgard in “Tarzan”
Yes, Tarzan is getting a reboot and with True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard in the titular role. Margot Robbie, who received positive reviews for her performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, has signed on as the leading lady – Jane Porter. Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are also attached, with David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2) directing. It’s safe to say Waltz will be playing a villain.
Tarzan is slated for a July 1, 2016 release date.
Maggie Q as a notorious Chinese pirate
Maggie Q will play a cunning, powerful, and terrifying Chinese pirate in Red Flag, a limited series from Steven Jensen’s Independent Television Group. Ching Shih, notable for being a female pirate in a world mostly dominated by men, was active in the early part of the 19th century in terrorizing the China Sea. Shih started off as a prostitute and, after assuming a leadership position within the Red Flag Fleet, she established a code of conduct which forbid her men from raping female prisoners, stealing from the pirate treasury, or looting from towns that provided assistance to the pirates.
