The Wachowski siblings’ next project, since the release of last year’s Cloud Atlas, is the action-packed, science fiction film Jupiter Ascending.
It stars Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, and Doona Bae.
Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
While the visuals look great, the casting seems a little weak. I like Channing Tatum in comedic roles; he did a great job in 21 Jump Street and even the action film White House Down, where the script called for a lot of funny moments. I don’t think of him as a particularly great dramatic actor, and I feel the same way regarding Mila Kunis. She was incredibly miscast in Oz the Great and Powerful, and she looks a little miscast in Jupiter Ascending, as well.
But that doesn’t mean I won’t give this one a try, because I most likely will. Plus, it’s the Wachowskis.
Jupiter Ascending will premiere in theaters on July 25, 2014.
