Denzel Washington has become the subject of another rumor regarding Batman vs. Superman – this time about a different iconic DC character. Rumors were previously floating around that Washington was being eyed for the role of Lex Luthor, one of Superman’s most notorious enemies, and now Nuke The Fridge is reporting that Washington is being considered for the role of Green Lantern via John Stewart. Fans of DC animation will be most familiar with John Stewart as Green Lantern, since he was a main character in the animated Justice League series.
Considering Washington is 59-years-old, it’s a little unusual for him to be playing a superhero, especially one who could potentially get his own solo movie. It definitely calls the authenticity of this rumor into question. The likelier outcome would be for Washington to play Lex Luthor (that would be pretty awesome). Then again, Ben Affleck was specifically cast to play a Batman who is older and wearier, so perhaps an older Green Lantern is in line with director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer’s vision for the film.
I’m definitely on board for a John Stewart Green Lantern, however. It brings much needed diversity into the upcoming Justice League movie, while taking away some of the stigma of Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern – an epic disaster of a superhero movie – which centered around the first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.
Would you want to see Denzel Washington play John Stewart/Green Lantern? If not, who would you want to see in the role?
