Official Trailer and First Look at Upcoming Dystopian Film ‘Divergent’

Okay, I’m gonna be honest with you here – based solely on the above trailer, Divergent actually looks like it could be decent.

Based on the first book of the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, the movie is set in a dystopian Chicago where the population is divided into five factions each representing a particular virtue. Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley), like all other sixteen-year-olds in this world, takes a test to help her decide which faction to join – but instead of getting one result, Tris gets three, making her “divergent” and a target for… something or other.

It’s all very Hunger Games-y (which itself was very Battle Royale-y), but Divergent also has an interesting, if a little unbelievable, premise, the action sequences aren’t half bad, there doesn’t seem to be a love triangle (major plus!), and the illustrious Maggie Q aka Badass of the Year Nikita Mears is in it. Also, you know, Shailene Woodley and Theo James, the actual stars of the movie.

The clip that Divergent ended up choosing as the first official look at the film, though… well, let’s just say I’m re-evaluating my opinions. Let’s also say that I’m in awe at how terrible that tattoo is, and how awkwardly this “romantic” scene plays out. Give it a look-see for yourself and let me know how long you laughed for.

Divergent hits theaters March 21, 2014.

  • This looks teeeerible. The premise doesn’t even make sense.
