Lily Allen Wants You To Forget Your Balls and Grow A Pair of Tits in “Hard Out Here”

Remember when “Smile” came out back in 2006 – as well as her other single “Alfie” whose subject currently stars as Theon Greyjoy on HBO’s Game of Thrones – and everyone fell in love with Lily Allen?

Later on, she was quickly eclipsed by artists with stronger, more powerhouse voices like Amy Winehouse and Adele. But I’ll always remember the Alright, Still days with fondness. It was a stellar album and it’s really a shame that her popularity in the United States ended up waning over the years. Her second album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, never quite reached the same level of success as Alright, Still – and that was back in 2009.

“Hard Out Here”, a play on Three 6 Mafia’s Oscar-winning song “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp”, is more electro-pop than Allen’s early stuff, but – considering the context of the song – the use of autotune is very purposeful. Allen’s use of non-white women as back-up dancers is iffy, but she also makes some pretty good points about the current pop culture climate and the music industry’s treatment of women.
