It’s official. This Fifty Shades of Grey movie is actually happening…

Is it too early to predict that this will be the end for Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson’s respective careers? Hunnam, who recently starred in Guillermo Del Toro’s critically-acclaimed Pacific Rim, will play Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of the best-selling erotica Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James.

Dakota Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith, will play the movie’s heroine and object of Grey’s obsession – Anastasia Steele. Johnson played Kate in FOX’s recently canceled sitcom, Ben and Kate. She has also appeared in The Social Network, 21 Jump Street, and The Five-Year Engagement.

Sam Taylor-Johnson, wife of actor Aaron Johnson (Anna Karenina, Kick-Ass 2), will direct.

Since the movie was announced, I’ve been wondering which unfortunate people will be cast in this hilarious trainwreck. Everyone from Emma Watson to Matt Bomer have been talked about – by fans, in particular – as a possibility. In March, Watson tweeted, “Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”

Fifty Shades of Grey, the erotic BDSM love story between a powerful billionaire and a sexually inexperienced college student, has been debated, discussed, and parodied all over the morning and late night shows. It’s even spawned a book parody titled Fifty Shames of Earl Grey.

Opinions of the book series has been sharply divided, but I imagine the movie could be a box office success despite the inevitable R or NC-17 rating. I don’t see this casting decision boding well for Hunnam and Johnson in the future, however.

Let’s face it – Fifty Shades of Grey will not be a critical success. The series was originally written as Twilight fanfiction and critics have lambasted the writing, character development, and representation of BDSM. The relationship between Christian and Anastasia, in particular, has been argued as being unhealthy and abusive.

I’m guessing the movie will be a loose adaptation of the book series.

Fifty Shades of Grey will hit theaters August 1, 2014.
