Indira Varma has been cast in “Game of Thrones”

Finally! A Game of Thrones casting that I can get on board with – Indira Varma (Rome, Luther) has been cast as Ellaria Sand, Oberyn Martell’s “sexual adventurous paramour” and the mother of his four youngest daughters.

Previously, I wrote about my disappointment in the casting of Oberyn Martell, aka The Red Viper, after Pedro Pascal was cast. Sherlock‘s Mark Gatiss has also been cast in an unspecified role although fan speculation points to Mace Tyrell, Margaery and Loras’ portly father.

I’m curious if the rest of House Martell will be introduced in Season 4, or whether we’ll have to wait for Season 5. Either way, I really enjoyed Indira Varma in Luther and look forward to seeing her on Game of Thrones.

Since Ellaria Sand doesn’t do much in the books, I hope the writers of Game of Thrones expand the role, like they did with Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer).

  • Praise Billith, she loooks stunning. Definitely looking forward to her scenes, hopefully some written by GRRM, given that Weiss and Benioff don’t really understand Martin’s characters.

  • Rita

Finally a woman of color on this show!
