June 9 – June 15, 2013
Hey, guys! We’re back with another installment of Weekly Pop Culture Picks.
Trailer for Elysium
Hera: The second trailer for Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, was released this past week. It’s much better than the first trailer that was released and, after watching it, I am so excited for this movie to come out. The action-filled, science fiction film takes place in a futuristic, dystopian world where the wealthy and privileged live in a high-tech paradise orbiting the Earth while everyone else lives in an impoverished and ruined Earth. The main action is driven by Damon’s character who embarks on a mission to get access to that orbiting paradise in the sky.
Kanye West’s album leaks
Christine: Seems like I’m unintentionally starting a theme of making my pop culture pick-of-the-week be an album leak, because here I am again bouncing up and down over Yeezus leaking out to the public a few days ago. From what I can tell so far, this is a Love It or Hate It album – and there are plenty of people on both sides of the fence.
Personally, I love it. It’s a big change from Kanye’s usual sound, and people who were hoping for a complete return to the Graduation and Late Registration eras were probably disappointed. Though I would’ve welcomed a throwback to those albums as well, there’s just something about Yeezus that draws you in. It’s just so in-yo-face.
Because I’m absolutely terrible at reviewing music like this without falling onto adjective cliches, let me just quote Jon Dolan from Rolling Stone:
“Yeezus is the darkest, most extreme music Kanye has ever cooked up, an extravagantly abrasive album full of grinding electro, pummeling minimalist hip-hop, drone-y wooz and industrial gear-grind.”
Yeah, I agree with all of that.
Mike Warren of Graceland
Max: Graceland started last week, and while I don’t think the first episode is bad, the show really came into its own in the second episode. The protagonist, Mike “Levi” Warren (Aaron Tveit) is by far my favorite character, and he’s probably become the breakout character of my televisual summer (if such a thing exists).
Last week, Mike took on the meth-head, cool-guy persona to take down some Russian mobsters, while this week, his standout moment had to with a very different cover story. Helping out FBI Agent Charlie DeMarco by going undercover as her boyfriend, they infiltrated a bar populated by drug dealers and made a drop. During the scene, Mike had to put on his best act as a sleazy, possessive boyfriend, and it was hilarious.
The writers’ choice to make this the way he meets undercover DEA agent Paige Arkin (Serinda Swan) was awesome, and Mike’s chemistry with fellow agent Charlie is interesting.
